Executive Summary
This paper explains the need for an outer ring fighter air defence for the protection of Joint Task Force Operations in a littoral environment. It demonstrates the vulnerability of fleet and task force units without such long range air defence and compares the effectiveness of fighter air defence weapons systems with surface systems that are limited by the radar horizon.
It also provides a relatively detailed insight into the level of air-launched missile threat that is likely to be encountered by task force operations in the future (Annex A).
